Cemented carbide is made of tungsten carbide powder as the matrix and cobalt powder as the binder after pressing and sintering, usually containing 94% of tungsten carbide and 6% of cobalt. Although the wear resistance is very good, its toughness is poor, its brittleness is high, and its processing is difficult, so it is suitable for high-speed cutting. In order to improve the performance of cemented carbide, the following two methods can be used:


1. Using coating technology, a layer of ultra-hard titanium carbide (TIC) or titanium nitride (TIN) film is chemically vapor deposited on the tungsten carbide substrate to make it have higher hardness.
2. Using ion implantation technology, a small amount of titanium, nitrogen, and carbon are injected into the matrix, which not only improves the hardness and strength, but also these implanted components can move inward when the drill is reground.
3. A layer of diamond film is formed on the top of the drill bit by physical method, which greatly improves the hardness and wear resistance of the drill bit.
