Titanium Aluminum (TiAl) Targets

Titanium aluminum (TiAl) targets and cathodes allow drills, milling machines, indexable cutting inserts and other tools to be protected by a strong anti-oxidation nitride coating (TiAlN).

 

High feed rate, excellent cutting performance, high metal removal rate: this is not a problem for titanium-aluminum-based coatings. You only need to use one thousandth of a millimeter of our materials to effectively protect your tools from wear and tear, thereby prolonging their service life. Titanium aluminum targets and cathodes are also used as decorative coatings on electronic products such as mobile phones, spectacle frames or high-end watch dials.

The material is sprayed using reactive magnetron sputtering or arc evaporation, and a layer of solid nitride is formed on the substrate by nitrogen.

High ductility and long service life
During the coating process, the sputtering target and arc cathode must withstand many severe application conditions. The material at the edge of the target must withstand a force of up to 1 ton. Brittle materials will break under such a large force of gravity. However, after adding aluminum, our material is particularly ductile. In order to ensure the ductility of the titanium aluminum target, we use the molding process to mix the titanium aluminum powder very carefully before the material is compacted, so that the aluminum distribution must be extremely uniform. Compared with the material processed by the melting process, the microstructure of the material is much more uniform, and the grain size is finer. The advantage of the powder metallurgy production process is that we can produce targets with superior fracture resistance and long service life.

Low temperature metal, smooth coating
During the coating process, even if exposed to high temperature, our target and cathode will not be affected. The aluminum content and the high density of the material give our cathodes and targets extremely high thermal conductivity, which can easily transfer heat to the copper plate behind them. If heat accumulates, the target material will migrate unevenly and droplets will form on the surface of the tool coating. Our targets can be kept at low temperatures to ensure smoother coatings.
